Wells City vs Avon Arsenal Comets U14
21st January 2007 at Wells
Comets Grab Promotion by the Tail
With one game still to go, Avon Arsenal Comets Under 14s grabbed the three
points they needed to guarantee promotion to the Midsomer Norton Youth Division
One by beating Wells City 4 - 3 away.
In difficult conditions Wells took an early two goal lead when they twice got
behind the Avon defence to leave keeper Charlie Yuille with little chance. Avon
responded with an immediate tactical switch which moved Josh Wright to Centre
Back and Jordan King to Left Back to support James McPhee and the outstanding
Matt O'Brien. This provided a platform for the two
central midfielders Sam Mason and Daniel Tope-Charlton to dominate the midfield
and the team were soon rewarded with a well struck shot from Ashley Hill and a
brace of goals from striker Jake Peard to enter half-time all square.
In the second half Avon continued to control the game. Iuen Pitts came close
with a shot but it was the decisive run from winger Jamie Wincomb that forced
the penalty that captain Jake Peard then slotted away for the lead and his
well-deserved hat-trick. Daniel Tope-Charlton further increased the score to 4 -
2 and although Wells got a late consolation goal Avon's victory was never in
doubt.
Avon have been impressive all season and only missed out on the league title the
previous weekend when they were narrowly beaten by Frome. Avon's final league
game of the season will be this Sunday when they are away to Paulton who they
beat 6 - 0 earlier in the season.
